For the past two years NextGEN has been hosting an annual Youth Ecovillage Summit (YES) at various ecovillages in North America. YES is our flagship event, bringing together young people from around the world who care about ecovillages as a model for a more sustainable future. During this weekend long event we dive deep into connection with each other, engagement with our host community, and powerful inspiration for the work we bring back to our homes.
Ecovillage Immersion During the three day event we fully immerse ourselves in our host ecovillage, seeking to experience a taste for authentic community living and deeply root in placed-based education. Through sharing meals, lodging, ceremony, stories, and crafts with the ecovillagers we gain insight into what a more sustainable and connected future might look like. A through tour of the grounds, presentation from founders, and community workday help us learn just what it takes to build a sustainable human settlement from the ground up.
Powerful Inspiration Whether you are interested in forming your own intentional community someday or just want to create more cooperative culture were you are living right now, ecovillages have something to teach everyone. The YES curriculum follows the model of Gaia Education, covering a integrated study in the four dimensions of sustainability: the ecological, social, economic, and cultural (or worldview). We use these focus areas as the launching point for dynamic discussion, activities, and build projects that teach us how we can create a brighter future for humanity.
Deep Connection It seems that every year, the most powerful part of this gathering is connecting with fellow participants, around the bonfire, during workshops, in the gardens and wherever else you may wander. A community of likeminded youth from across North America quickly emerges. We make time during the event to hear each other’s stories and projects, as well as encourage fruitful connections to last long after our three days together.
